Measuring the Masses of Supermassive Black Holes
نویسنده
چکیده
Supermassive black holes reside at the centers of most, if not all, massive galaxies: the difference between active and quiescent galaxies is due to differences in accretion rate relative to the Eddington rate and thus radiative efficiency. In this contribution, methods for measuring the masses of supermassive black holes are discussed, with emphasis on reverberation mapping which is most generally applicable to accreting supermassive black holes and, in particular, to distant quasars where time resolution can be used as a surrogate for angular resolution. Indirect methods based on scaling relationships from reverberation mapping studies are also discussed, along with their current limitations.

Low-mass black holes as the remnants of primordial black hole formation.
Bridging the gap between the approximately ten solar mass 'stellar mass' black holes and the 'supermassive' black holes of millions to billions of solar masses are the elusive 'intermediate-mass' black holes. Their discovery is key to understanding whether supermassive black holes can grow from stellar-mass black holes or whether a more exotic process accelerated their growth soon after the Big...
متن کاملThe distribution of supermassive black holes in the nuclei of nearby galaxies
The growth of supermassive black holes by merging and accretion in hierarchical models of galaxy formation is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. A tight linear relation between masses of black holes and masses of bulges arises if the mass accreted by supermassive black holes scales linearly with the mass forming stars and if the redshift evolution of mass accretion tracks closely that...
متن کاملGalactic Mergers with Supermassive Black Holes
We present the results of N -body simulations of the accretion of high-density dwarf galaxies by low-density giant galaxies. Both galaxies contain power-law central density cusps and point masses representing supermassive black holes; the ratio of galaxy masses is 3 : 1. The cusp of the dwarf galaxy is always disrupted during the merger, leading to a remnant with a weak power law in the intrins...
متن کاملMeasuring spin of a supermassive black hole at the Galactic Centre – Implications for a unique spin
We determine the spin of a supermassive black hole in the context of discseismology by comparing newly detected quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of radio emission in the Galactic centre, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), as well as infrared and X-ray emissions with those of the Galactic black holes. We find that the spin parameters of black holes in Sgr A* and in Galactic X-ray sources have a unique v...
متن کاملUsing MgII to investigate quasars and their black-hole masses
We highlight the importance of the MgIIλ2800 emission-line doublet in probing high-redshift quasars and their supermassive black holes. In the SDSS era, where large scale investigations of quasars across the age of the Universe are possible, this emission-line has the ability to provide accurate systemic redshifts which are important for a variety of follow-up studies, as well as probe the mass...
